24 killed in China earthquake

Panzhihua (China) : Twenty four people were killed after a 6.1 Richter quake hit China’s Sichuan province, officials said Sunday.

Sixteen deaths were reported in Saturday’s quake in Huili, a county in the province, three deaths in Panzhihua and five other deaths in Yunnan, a major tourist region.

At least 400 people were injured in the quake that struck the juncture of Renhe district in Panzhihua and Huili county at 4.30 p.m. Saturday.

The epicentre was about 50 km southeast of downtown Panzhihua, at 26.2 degrees north latitude and 101.9 degrees east longitude and at a depth of 10 km, according to the China Earthquake Administration.

The quake also destroyed plenty of houses, and other infrastructure.
