New Delhi : The Delhi government Saturday announced a donation of Rs.50 million to Bihar that has been reeling under intense flood for the last two weeks.
After a cabinet meeting, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said the capital city has expressed grief over large-scale loss of life in the unprecedented flood, which is no less than a disaster.
“An amount of Rs.5 crore (Rs.50 million) is being contributed to the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund for onward transmission to Bihar for providing relief to the victims who have been facing difficulties,” said Dikshit.
The floods were triggered by the Kosi river changing its course.
According to the Bihar government, over 2.5 million people in 14 districts were affected by floods. Over 300,000 heads of cattle were also affected.
Twelve days after floods hit Bihar, the state Disaster Management Cell has confirmed 12 deaths due to floods with eight from Madhepura and four from Saharsa, two of the four worst hit districts. The other two death reports are Supaul and Araria.
However, unconfirmed reports said at least 60 people have died in the floods.
