“Lieutenant Colonel Yas Khudheir Abbas, a police chief in Kut, some 180 km south of Baghdad, was seriously injured when unknown gunmen stormed early in the morning his house in the al-Ezza neighborhood in western the city,” the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

Abbas’s wife was killed during the incident, the source said, adding that the motivation behind the attack remained unknown.

Sporadic attacks continue in Iraq despite the U.S. and Iraqi officials announced a lull in violence during the past months.
