New Delhi : Six days after the worst terror attack on Mumbai which left 171 people including 26 foreign nationals dead, the city’s police refuted the earlier claim of a Malaysian link.
Malaysian Consul-General in Mumbai Wan Zaidi Wan Abdullah said the Mumbai police informed him Tuesday that so far the ongoing probe did not indicate any association with Malaysia.
“They denied any link to Malaysia so far. Early rumours yet to be substantiated,” he told Bernama after attending a special briefing by the protocol division in Mumbai.
“I have personally spoken to the Mumbai commissioner of police (Hasan Gafoor) and he said there was no such links so far,” he added.
News reports surfaced last week that the assailants had used Malaysian addresses to rent houses in Colaba area in the southern part of the city where they struck with AK-47 rifles and hand grenades.
There were also reports that a credit card issued in Malaysia was found on one of the dead terrorists.
Earlier, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Rakesh Maria also denied reports that terrorists staying in Colaba used Malaysian student identity cards.
In KUALA LUMPUR, the Indian Government will assist Malaysian police over allegations that some terrorists in last week’s Mumbai attacks had used Malaysian addresses to rent apartments in the Indian city.
India High Commissioner to Malaysia Ashok K. Kantha said Tuesday the Indian Government, through its high commission here, was ready to offer whatever neccesary assistance.
“Both Malaysia and India enjoy strong bilateral ties and for that goodwill, we will assist the Malaysian police in required sectors of the matter. We are following (up on) the development of the allegations.
“However, we need to wait for the outcome and let the authorities in India conduct their probe into the allegations. We hope for the best,” he told reporters Tuesday.
