Kolkata : Kolkata Police have instructed leading schools here to install closed-circuit TV cameras and metal detectors besides arranging for special training for the students and staff as part of a drive to step up security and tackle emergency situations like the Mumbai terror strikes.
The measures were discussed during a recent meeting between the police top brass and school authorities during which the latter were also asked to increase the number of security personnel and draw up a layout map of their premises.
“We recently had a meeting with authorities of about 50 city schools and we gave them some guidelines on how to step up security for student-safety, especially after the Mumbai attack,” city police joint commissioner (administration) Pradip Chattopadhyay told IANS Thursday.
He said the schools have been asked to install CCTV cameras in vital areas within the institutions and metal detectors at the main gates.
“Every visitor and parents of the students should be thoroughly checked,” he said.
“Apart from the CCTV cameras, we have asked them to increase the number of security personnel within the campus and also draw up a layout map of the school buildings and surrounding areas that will help authorities keep a watch on possible trespassing.”
“Apart from school buses, entry within the school premises should be restricted for all vehicles, especially taxis. If any vehicle enters with the permission of the authorities, security guards must keep a record of the number plates,” Chattopadhyay said.
The joint commissioner said the schools must arrange for special police training for students as well as the staff.
“These days schools get bomb hoax calls and emails. School authorities must take the initiative to train students and staff members to handle such a situation. Special police training should also be given to them for emergency situations,” he said.
Such training could include keeping a watch on trespassers, spotting suspects, handling any suspicious object and self-protection.
“The schools will get all possible assistance from us in the training,” Chattopadhyay added.
