Home Minister P. Chidambaram Friday admitted that there had been “lapses on the part of the government” in preventing the horrifying assault on India’s financial capital.

“Proper accountability needs to be fixed,” BJP spokesperson Ravi Shanker Prasad told reporters here.

He also criticised the Congress for taking a long time in naming the successor to Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh who was asked to step down after the three-day-long attack.

The party Friday appointed Ashok Shankarrao Chavan as the new chief minister. He is the son of veteran Congress leader and two time chief minister Shankarrao Chavan, the first father-son duo to hold the top political post in the state.

“When the people are expecting tough action against terrorism, External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Defence Minister A.K. Antony are sitting in Mumbai creating a political drama,” he said.

“Such a big incident has taken place but the Congress has learnt nothing from the past,” Prasad alleged.

Meanwhile, a party source said BJP leader L.K. Advani had an hour-long meeting with the Israeli ambassador Thursday night. Advani gave an assurance that the country would do everything in its power to tackle terrorism.
