Afghan mayor, 44 others wounded in bomb explosion

Baghdad : The mayor of eastern Afghanistan’s Baquba city and 43 others were wounded Sunday when a bomb planted at the roadside exploded as his convoy was passing Sunday, reports received here said.

Mayor Abdullah al-Khayali and Colonel Raghib al-Omairi, head of the military operations in the city, were among 44 wounded by a powerful blast near Khayali’s convoy in the Souq area of the the capital of Diyala province.

More than 14 security members and many civilians were among the wounded, the police said.

Diyala province, which stretches from eastern edges of Baghdad to the Iranian border, has been the stronghold of Al Qaeda in Iraq network and other insurgent groups since the US-led invasion in 2003.
