Mumbai : The Maharashtra government Thursday fulfilled its promise of allotting free permanent flats to the families of all police personnel killed in combatting the terrorists in Mumbai last month.
Mumbai Congress president Kripa Shankar Singh visited the families of some of the martyred police personnel at their homes Thursday evening and handed over the documents for the new flats.
Taking a cue from Home Minister P. Chidambaram’s advice last week to the state government to award all compensation to the terror victims by Dec 31, the state government moved post-haste to fulfill the commitment made by former chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh.
Singh handed over the allotment letters of two-bedroom-hall-kitchen flats of 965 square feet at Oshiwara and compensation cheques of Rs.100,000 each to Kavita, wife of former Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) chief Hemant Karkare, and Smita, wife of ‘encounter specialist’ Vijay Salaskar.
He handed over owenrship papers of government flats at Pratiksha Nagar to the families of slain sub-inspector Prakash Pandurang More and police constable Jayant Hanumant Patil.
On Friday, the allotment letters for flats at Oshiwara and Pratiksha Nagar and compensation cheques will be given to the family members of the other 14 martyred police personnel, including late additional police commissioner Ashok Kamte of Pune and National Security Gaurd (NSG) commando Maj. Sandeep Unnikrishnan in Bangalore.
