Rahul Gandhi in Uttar Pradesh, meets accident victims’ kins

Lucknow : Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi came to Uttar Pradesh Friday afternoon to meet the family members of those who were killed in a burning bus Dec 9 in Firozabad district, officials said.

As many as 63 persons from Sultanpur district, including 17 children, died when the bus they were travelling in caught fire in Firozabad, 300 km from here.

Rahul Gandhi landed at the Fursatganj airport in Sultanpur district around 1 p.m. and headed towards the Chitawanpur village, district police chief D.C. Mishra told IANS by phone.

“He visited the houses of each and every victim in at least six villages of the district and assured all possible help to the family members of the victims,” AP Singh, spokesman of the state Congress unit, told IANS by phone.

At least 26 residents of Chitawanpur, the most affected village, died in the accident and Gandhi visited the houses of the family members of all victims.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati also visited Sultanpur Wednesday and met the family members of the victims.

“However, she met them collectively at a common place in the district but Gandhi will visit the house of each victim individually,” the source added.

Gandhi flew back to Delhi around 5 p.m., Singh added.
