Pakistan: govt, opposition, masses united on national security issue, says Minister Sherry

Islamabad : Minister for Information and Broadcasting Sherry Rehman said that the government, opposition and the masses are united on the issue of national security and nobody would be allowed to use Pakistan territory for terrorism and nor anybody would be allowed to commit aggression against our country.

Talking to mediapersons at Parliament House, she said that it was time to adopt a joint strategy for defence of the country.

She said at this time defence of the country was the top priority of the government and for this reason it has taken all political parties into confidence.

She lauded the role of Pakistani media after the Mumbai blasts.

To a question she said the government would take all measures for set up and implement the 8th Wage Board Award.

Sherry Rehman said that the government would set up a trilateral commission for early constitution of new Wage Board Award.

She referred to the suicide of a TV channel staffer and said that she had talked to the family of the deceased. They do not hold management of the TV channel responsible for the tragic incident. However, she said that the government would investigate the matter.

She said that the PPP has always worked for the rights of the labour class and the journalists. The credit for institutionalising the Wage Board in 1973 Constitution goes to the PPP regime led by Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto.

Earlier, the journalists staged a walk- out from the Press Gallery.

They also demanded action against those responsible for the death of a TV channel journalist Muhammad Azam Khan.

Minister for State for Information and Broadcasting Sumsam Bukhari assured the journalists that those found responsible for the suicide of a private TV channel would be held accountable.

He said this while talking to journalists in Parliament lobby after they staged a walk-out from the National Assembly press gallery to protest against the tragic death of the Muhammad Azam Khan.

“ This is a democratic government, not a dictatorship and action would be taken against the persons responsible for this tragic incident”, said Sumsam Bukhari.

He said that on Saturday he himself would visit Lahore to meet the proprietors of the TV channel.

“The government wants to provide protection to journalists and practical steps would be taken in this regard ,”he added.
