New Delhi : With the 2010 Commonwealth Games in mind, the capital’s civic authority has decided to undertake a major revamping of the city roads, especially those around the Games’ venues.
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), that manages 90 percent of the capital’s land area, announced Thursday it would spend Rs.1 billion to revamp the roads in the vicinity of the Games venues.
“The MCD will upgrade and strengthen the Commonwealth Games related roads and improve their streetscape at a cost of Rs.1 billion,” said Vijender Gupta, chairman of the civic corporation’s standing committee.
“The work to be undertaken will include improvement in riding quality of roads, improvement of drainage system, footpaths, street lights and road signages,” Gupta added.
The roads have been identified on the basis of a study conducted by the Delhi government for preparation of traffic circulation and parking plans during the Commonwealth Games.
“It is estimated that around 8,000 athletes and 2,000 technical officials will be participating in the Games. The Games will be held in eleven stadiums and practicing venues located in different parts of the city,” Gupta said.
Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Thyagaraj Stadium, Siri Fort Stadium, R.K. Khanna Tennis Stadium, Shooting Range Stadia, Delhi University Grounds, Chhatrsal Stadium will be the major venues of the Games within the jurisdiction of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi.
The connectivity of these venues with the airport, hospitals and tourist places will also receive attention, the civic officials said.
