New Delhi : The provision in the Right To Education Bill about continuous promotion of students up to class-VIII has drawn flak from teachers, who think it will dilute the standard of education in the country.

“We oppose this provision because it will dilute the quality of education. If we promote a child before he attains the minimum competence level, he will find it difficult to grasp at the next class,” Vandana Puri, Principal of Salwan Public School, said.

She said that doing away with retention in classes will abolish the system of check and balance.

“By this provision, we are encouraging mediocrity. This will produce educated illiterates in the country,” she said.

The system will break the natural process of promotion of students in school, she said.

R P Malik, Chairman of Federation of Public Schools, said that the federation would oppose this provision in the Bill, which has been introduced in the Rajya Sabha (Upper House) last week.

“There must be examination system in the schools. Otherwise, we cannot produce talented human resource,” he said.

Malik said that if an undeserving student’s promotion is not checked at an early stage, he may not accept failure at a later stage.

Teaches felt that check and balance is a healthy mechanism that helps the students know their weaknesses and improve.
