Chandigarh : A dense blanket of fog enveloped most parts of Punjab and Haryana Sunday morning, reducing the visibility level on roads and affecting rail traffic as well.

“There is thick fog all over Chandigarh, Punjab and Haryana. It is the result of excessive moisture present in the air and a decline in the night temperature as compared to the day temperature. Snowfall in Himachal Pradesh is another factor responsible for this,” Chatar Singh Malik, director of the meteorological department at Chandigarh, told IANS.

“The visibility level on the roads has also reduced substantially by up to one kilometre. We are expecting the level of fog to increase with each passing day, especially in the mornings and evenings,” he added.

Vehicles were seeing plying on the roads here with their headlights on even at 10 a.m.

The schedule of some long distance trains at several places in the two states were also disrupted following low visibility due to the dense fog. Many trains coming from Delhi to this region were delayed by three to six hours, a railway official at Chandigarh station said.
