Panaji : The Goa police have detained a man who strayed into a prohibited defence area in the port town of Vasco early Wednesday morning, barely a few hours before the arrival of Union minister of State for Home Sriprakash Jaiswal.
“We are interrogating one person who had entered the prohibited area in the early hours of Wednesday. He has been detained for the time being and is being questioned,” Superintendent of Police (CID) Atmaram Deshpande said.
While Deshpande refused to elaborate on the issue, police sources said the man was nabbed by the Vasco police near Sada plateau, which is a designated defence area.
Several officers including the Superintendent of Police Allen D’Sa and the Deputy Superintendent of Police Deu Benaulikar rushed to the spot and were involved in the interrogation of the suspect. The policemen were accompanied by Intelligence Bureau officials, sources added.
Jaiswal is to chair an internal security review meeting with the chief minister and top police and administrative officials Wednesday.
Vasco is home to several sensitive vital installations, including the Mormugao Port Trust, Indian Navy and Coast Guard establishments and Indian Oil Corporation oil storage tanks. Goa’s only airport at Dabolim is a short distance from Vasco town.
Goa, which has been on the terror radar for the last few weeks, has witnessed unprecedented increase in security during the festive week of Christmas coinciding with the height of the tourist season.
