Arrested from a Kathmandu casino in 2003, Sobhraj, wanted for serial crimes in over 12 countries in the ’70s, was charged with the murder of an American backpacker almost three decades ago and sentenced to prison for life.

He has been appealing against the verdict since 2004. On Sunday, the two Supreme Court judges hearing his final appeal said they would announce the verdict Jan 13.

The trial has been marked by long delays that made the United Nations this month send its representatives to Kathmandu’s Central Jail, where Sobhraj is serving his term, to look into allegations that he was facing discrimination by the jail authorities and death threats by other prisoners.
