Baby born in flight over Canada gets Canadian citizenship

Toronto : There was enough mid-air drama on New Year’s Eve to keep this country riveted. While an unruly Canadian passenger spoilt the New Year party for over 200 fellow passengers, a baby born on a flight in Canadian airspace became a citizen.

The baby was born aboard a Northwest Airlines flight from the Netherlands to Boston.

Since the baby was born in Canadian airspace over the Atlantic, she was registered as a Canadian citizen to meet customs requirements. The mother and baby were taken to hospital on landing at Boston’s Logan International Airport.

Reports said the mother’s nationality is not known.

The woman went into labour in mid-air and was assisted in delivering the baby by a doctor abroad the flight which left Holland with 124 passengers and landed in Boston at 10.30 a.m. Wednesday.

On the same day, 33-year-old Adrian Worrell from Toronto spoilt the New Year party for more than 200 fellow passengers on a Toronto-bound flight from Grenada, forcing the plane to make an unscheduled landing in the Dominican Republic.

Flight 828 of Skyservice charter airline was diverted to Punta Cana when the Toronto man started tampering with a cabin door, the Canadian Press reported.

He was subdued by the cabin crew and other staff and handed over to the authorities in the Dominican Republic after the plane made an unscheduled landing.
