India congratulates Hasina on winning general election in B’desh

New Delhi : India’s Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh Tuesday congratulated Sheikh Hasina on her landslide victory in general elections.

Dr. Singh called Mrs. Sheikh Hasina, president of the Awami League Party of Bangladesh this morning and warmly congratulated her on the landslide victory in the general elections.

The prime minister said that India looked forward to working with the government and people of Bangladesh in the years ahead for the mutual benefit of the people of the two countries.

Meanwhile, welcoming the return of multi-party democratic politics in Bangladesh, a statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs said that the historic victory of the Awami League and the Grand Alliance led by Sheikh Hasina is a major landmark in democratic politics in South Asia.

It said that the people of Bangladesh have spoken with one voice to reiterate their faith in the democratic process and their desire for development and progress.

New Delhi also congratulated the people of Bangladesh on the fair, peaceful and free conduct of their general elections.

Describing Bangladesh as a close and friendly neighbor, the statement said that both the countries share common values, a commitment to democracy and a multi-faceted historical relationship, in every field of human endeavor. India looks forward to working closely with the newly elected Government in Dhaka to further strengthen the bonds of friendship and cooperation in the quest for peace and development.
