New Delhi : The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) Saturday asked the central government to withdraw its decision to impose conditions on the scholarship scheme for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes students.

The CPI-M criticised the government’s decision to deny post-metric scholarships to the students who failed to get at least 60 percent marks saying that both the finance ministry and the Planning Commission – who the communists say were behind the decision – were trying to “impose their flawed understanding to cut subsidies”.

“The percentage of students of oppressed sections in professional institutions is already dismally low and such a decision will lead to further marginalization,” the CPI-M politburo statement said.

“The CPI-M calls on the government to withdraw the decision.”

The party, which along with three other Left parties extends crucial support to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s government, also urged the government to bring forward “appropriate central legislation to bring private institutions under social control in some key areas as fees and admissions”.
