Kuwait Information Minister boast “high ceiling” of press freedom

Cairo : Kuwait’s Information Minister Sheikh Sabah Al-Khalid Al-Sabah described his country’s press as having “a high ceiling of freedom” that was governed by the press and publications law in order to achieve social maturity and development.

In an interview with the weekly “October” magazine, published Sunday, the minister explained that there were no “red lines” for the press as long at the press and publications law was adhered to, “thus guaranteeing justice and protecting the society.”

Moreover, he expressed Kuwait’s pride with the publication of new political dailies, which he said were expected to exceed 12 by the end of this year, describing this as “a healthy phenomena.”

As for marketing His Highness the Amir’s vision to transform Kuwait into a regional financial, economic and investment center, the minister explained that the media address was constantly being directed and rallied to this effect.

Kuwait cannot be transformed into an international investment center without the presence of two dimensions, “national media on the internal front, and international media,” Sheikh Sabah Al-Khalid explained.

On the reorganization of departments of the Information Ministry, the minister lauded efforts of his predecessors in placing plans and visions for developing the country’s media address, saying that the information undersecretaries and assistant undersecretaries “are providing the strongest support.”

The minister noted efforts to create a “qualitative leap” in media technology, thus providing local television and radio stations with up-to-date technology and training for national human resources.

Sheikh Sabah Al-Khalid also said there was emphasis on foreign media in order to maintain presence abroad in cooperation with the Foreign Ministry, thus aiming for a joint media and diplomatic address.

The minister explained that an economic dimension was also added to this address.

And on Kuwaiti-Egyptian relations, he said, “We are proud of these distinctive bilateral relations at the political, economic, media and cultural levels.”
