Emphasising that that Maharashtra has always been a “secular state”, Deshmukh promised that security personnel would be deployed in all sensitive areas in the city and the state.

Deshmukh gave this assurance to a delegation led by Samajwadi Party state president Abu Asim Azmi, who had come to lodge a protest against “government inaction” in the wake of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena activists attacking north Indians.

Azmi urged the chief minister to adopt an impartial view and initiate action against MNS chief Raj Thackeray, the estranged nephew of Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray.

State Director General of Police (DGP) P.S. Pasricha announced Monday evening that directions have been issued to all deputy commissioners of police in Mumbai and elsewhere to remain on high alert and deploy appropriate security measures wherever required.
