New Delhi : The union home ministry has asked the Maharashtra government about the ongoing violence in the state triggered by the statement of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray against north Indian migrants and also actor Amitabh Bachchan.
Union Home Secretary Madhukar Gupta called up officials in the Maharashtra government to inquire about the violence and vandalism on the streets of Mumbai since Sunday, home ministry sources said.
Gupta was assured that all necessary steps have been taken and the situation was under control.
Thackeray blamed Bachchan Saturday for being more loyal to his home state Uttar Pradesh than Maharashtra where the superstar has earned his fortune and stardom. Thackeray cited Bachchan’s proximity to the Samajwadi Party (SP), and said he had acted as brand ambassador for Uttar Pradesh when the party was in power in 2007.
The SP and MNS workers clashed on Monday over the issue. Public property was damaged by MNS workers who also targeted several taxis to vent their ire. SP and other parties blamed the Maharastra government for not taking quick action to prevent the violence from spreading.
Though two police complaints were lodged against Thackeray, he was not arrested.
