A spokesman for the Israeli army has confirmed the report to RIA Novosti. According to local media, the killed fighters were members of Islamic Jihad, a radical group operating in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip that has claimed responsibility for many of the rocket attacks on Israel from Gaza.

On Sunday, Egypt sealed off its short border with Gaza, 12 days after militants from Islamist group Hamas blew up part of the border wall. Gaza residents have been subjected to a seven-month blockade by Israel, and had used the border breach to buy urgently needed supplies in Egypt.
