The soldier was guarding the shrine for Chinese descendants who went to pay respect to the goddess in Sai Buri district when the bomb went off in the morning, the Bangkok Post reported on its website.

He was rushed to hospital and security forces have reached the shrine for investigating.

Thailand’s three southernmost provinces — Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat have been troubled with insurgency-related violence which has claimed more than 2,800 lives since it resumed in early 2004.
