Beijing : By next spring at the latest, there will be more Chinese internet surfers than US users, according to Diario del Pueblo on Tuesday.
The Asian nation ended 2007 with a 210 million users, compared to 137 million in 2006 – a 53 percent growth; whereas US internet subscribers reached 215 million.
Millions of internet users however, do not subscribe, but regularly use cybercafés dispersed throughout towns and cities in the Asian giant.
An example of the effect of the changing proportion of Internet users should be seen this week when cyberspace is saturated with holiday wishes for the Chinese New Year.
