Germany urges clarification of UNICEF’s mismanagement charges

Berlin : The German government here Tuesday called for speedy clarification of all financial mismanagement accusations against the German section of the UN children’s agency UNICEF.

Talking at a routine news conference, deputy government spokesman Thomas Steg stressed all accusations had “to be clarified as quickly as possible” so that UNICEF’s reputation in Germany is “not damaged.” He added that Chancellor Angela Merkel has been “very closely” following the case.

Meanwhile, a spokeswoman for the German Foreign Ministry voiced hope that the new UNICEF chairman, Reinhard Schlagintweit would soon remove all lingering doubts and settle the case.

UNICEF Germany has been embroiled in a financial mismanagement affair, leading to the resignation of honorary UNICEF chairwoman Heide Simonis.

UNICEF Germany has also faced a massive decline in donations as a result of the financial scandal.
