Brussels : The European Union declined Thursday to comment on a parliament vote in Turkey on the Muslim headscarf saying it is an internal matter for Turkey.

“On this issue I dont have any particular comment to make and the reason for that is that there is no EU legislation on the issue of wearing of the headscarf,” Krisztina Nagy, a spokesperson for the European Commission, told journalists here today.

Turkeys parliament voted by a large majority on Thursday to ease a decades-old constitutional ban on the wearing of the Muslim headscarf at public universities.

Nagy explained that there is no unified practice on the headscarf among EU member states… “therefore we are not in a position to make any particular comment on that matter”.

“This is an issue that has to be debated in the Turkish society,” she added.

Turkey is a candidate country for EU membership.
