According to the report released by the National Association of Software and Services Companies (Nasscom), Indian IT industry body and McKinsey and Co, a management-consulting firm, Indian IT firms can tap an estimated $524 billion in revenues from IMS.

“The Indian IT industry has been rapidly growing with new specialised and value added offerings being delivered. Each of these services is reaching critical mass and has uniqueness therefore necessitating finer segmentation and a more focused approach,” Nasscom’s new president Som Mittal said at a conference Thursday here.

“Like IT and BPO, we see remote or offshore infrastructure management as a large opportunity requiring focused attention and nurturing,” Mittal said.

The report stated that so far vendors and captives in low-cost locations like that of India have captured a mere $6-7 billion of this opportunity. In India, mainly HCL Comnet and Wipro Technologies have revenues from IMS services.

“India is once again, well positioned to capture a disproportionate share of this growth by 2013, that is about $13-15 billion and in the process create 325,000 to 375,000 jobs,” said Vivek Pandit of McKinsey.

According to the report, Indian vendors have increasing scale and maturity, deep customer relationships, access to sound technical infrastructure, and access to and the ability to manage a large low-cost talent pool, which will all propel the growth of IMS services in India.

Through managing infrastructure from a remote location, companies can cut down their cost of operations and management by 40-60 percent, the report highlighted.
