Berlin : More than 40 foreign and defense officials from around the world will take part in the 44th International Conference on Security Policy to kick off in Munich Friday evening, the German government said.
The daily bulletin of the government’s federal department said three prime ministers will also participate in the three-day conference.
Newly-elected Serbian President Boris Tadic will give a speech at the event and Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan will give a speech at the opening ceremony on Saturday.
The conference will discuss the mission of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in Afghanistan, combating the spread of nuclear weapons, the situation in Russia, and the role of the Asian continent in achieving an international security system.
The conference will be attended by Japanese Foreign Minister Masahiko Komura, US Defense Secretary Robert Gates, Russia’s First Deputy Prime Minister Sergei Borisovich Ivanov, NATO Secretary-General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, and International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) chief Mohammed El-Baradei.
The conference’s peace prize will be given to a Canadian soldier who will be representing all soldiers who served the cause of international peace through working with the NATO.
