Annan told BBC radio in Nairobi that settling this crisis, which started when Mwai Kibaki was declared winner of the presidential race on December 27, still demands further effort.

The foreign ministers of east Africa share Annan’s views on Kenya but the opposition accused them of trying to undermine the process.

On behalf of the InterGovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), Ethiopian FM Seyoum Mesfin said his presence means support to Kenya and Annan’s mediation on behalf of the African Union so all Africa must accept his authority.

Seyoum called unacceptable the ensuing violence that has claimed thousands of victims, including over 300,000 displaced, since Kenya is acting chairman of the IGAD and its efforts to settle the conflicts in Somalia and Sudan are highly commended.

Official sources announced the 72-hour visit by John Holmes, UN undersecretary for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Coordination, for on-site assessment of the situation.
