Sri Lankan Navy kills an Indian fisherman

NEW DELHI, Feb. 10 (APP): Sri Lankan Navy killed an Indian fisherman on Saturday night when they opened fire on a fishing boat at Palk Strait.
According to details, a fishing boat with Tamil Nadu fishermen went to sea off Dhanushkodi coast. When it reached near maritime border with Sri Lanka, the Sri Lankan naval security personnel intercepted it and opened fire on them, media reports quoting Indian officials said.

As a result of firing, Thangapandi, a 35-year old fisherman died on the spot while others fled from the scene.

Meanwhile, M Karunanidhi, Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu state has said he will take up the issue with the Centre, a press release issued in Chennai on Sunday said.

India had already beefed up security in its southern coastal areas and several naval vessels had been pressed into service to patrol the sea lanes to prevent Tamil tigers intruding into the Indian mainland.
