New Delhi: With Delhi Assembly and national elections likely to be held within a year, the Congress Party has begun to appear concerned over the pitiable conditions of Muslims, the largest minority in the country.
On 12th February, a seminar on problems confronting the community was held at Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) office in New Delhi. More Muslims should be given tickets in the coming state assembly election, Sachar Committee recommendations should be implemented and higher technical institutes should be established for Muslim girls. These were the demands raised at the seminar. Appointment of Urdu teachers and Urdu translators and availability of inexpensive and standard medical services in Muslim dominated areas were other issues discussed in the program.
Delhi Wakf Board chairman and Member of Legislative Assembly Chaudhary Mateen said the Congress surely framed policies for Muslims but no serious effort to implement them was ever made. The constitution of the Minorities Financial Corporation is an example, he said. It is often claimed that the Corporation’s budget touches rupees 50 billion but the reality is that even rupees 50 million does not reach Muslims, he said.
Those who spoke on the occasion included DPCC president and Member of Parliament Jai Prakash Aggarwal and Secretary of All India Congress Party and Member of Legislative Assembly Parvez Hashimi.
