Musa Qala, a Taliban stronghold in Afghanistan’s troubled Helmand province, was regained by Afghan government forces last December during a major offensive launched with assistance from foreign troops.

Haji Abdul Salam, also known as Mullah Salam, the new district chief of Musa Qala, confirmed the bombing and said Afghan security forces started a search operation in the area following the incident. But they have so far not made any arrest, he added.

No one has claimed responsibility for the blast so far.

The Taliban militants, who once controlled the town for months, usually launch such guerrilla-style attacks against Afghan and foreign forces.
