The secretary had the remark as guest at a banquet at the Kuwaiti Embassy in Washington hosted by Ambassador Sheikh Salem Al-Abdullah Al-Sabah.

The host, on his part, noted Secretary Chertoff’s diligent efforts and his unique status among US figures. Relations between the two states, he added, had further boomed after the visit of US President George W. Bush to Kuwait in January.

“The strong relations between the two nations are based on many shared goals and principles, most and foremost, a shared desire to guarantee world peace and stability,” Sheikh Salem noted.

The ceremony at the embassy was attended by a guest list of senior US officials and figures, and the guests included Washington Mayor Adrian M. Fenty, members of the US House of Representatives Gene Harman and Ed Markey, Supreme Court judges Samuel Alito and Antonin Scalia, former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Peter Pace, among others.
