United Nations : Iran’s permanent representative to the United Nations has warned against any move by the Security Council against the country’s nuclear programme.
Mohammad Khazaei made the remarks in a meeting with officials of the Non-Aligned Movement states which are non-permanent members of the Security Council.
“Certain big powers have used the Security Council as a means to damage the UN prestige. Under circumstances that reports and statements by officials of the International Atomic Energy Agency proved Iran’s cooperation and transparency of the national programme, any new move by the council will damage prestige of the UN and the IAEA, in particular,” he said Wednesday.
He stressed that the Iranian nation would never give up its inalienable right and called on the Non-Aligned Movement countries not to support the new resolution of Western states against Iran to prevent damaging prestige of the IAEA.
Khazaei outlined the latest developments on Iran’s nuclear programme, trend of Iran-IAEA cooperation and legal and political reasons based on which Tehran believes that discussing Iran’s nuclear programme at the Security Council is illegal.
The NAM members praised progress made in cooperation between Iran and the IAEA and stressed that the agency is the only specialised body to discuss Iran’s nuclear issue.
South Africa, Indonesia, Libya, Vietnam, Panama and Burkina Faso are non-permanent members of the Security Council.
