Lucknow : The Uttar Pradesh assembly Friday unanimously resolved to dismiss a query under the Right to Information (RTI) Act as a “breach of privilege”.
The query was by Ramesh Tiwari, a journalist of Bhumika monthly.
Tiwari originally made a request to the speaker and the secretary of the state assembly, seeking to know whether a legislator could obtain a government contract in his own name and whether such an act could make him liable to be disqualified from the membership of the assembly.
However, when he did not receive any reply from assembly officials, he approached state RTI Commissioner Justice M.A. Khan, who in turn shot off a notice to the speaker and secretary.
Taking strong exception to the notice, the house unanimously resolved to dismiss the request.
While terming the RTI Commission’s notice as breach of privilege, the house passed a resolution warning the commission.
“The commission has no business to issue notices to us,” assembly secretary R.P. Pandey told reporters here. “This amounts to outright breach of privilege of the House,” he added.
