London : The Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) flexed its disciplinary muscles Monday, banning a fourth Italian player for wagering on matches.
Giorgio Galimberti, whose ranking stands outside the top 100, joined compatriots Potito Starace, Daniele Bracciali and Alessio Di Mauro in becoming poster children for the anti-corruption war being waged by the men’s sanctioning body.
Starace just returned this week after serving his sanction for betting on matches not involving him.
An ATP statement said that Galimberti, 31, had wagered on tennis matches from June 2003 to January 2006.
An independent anti-corruption official handed Galimberti a 100-day suspension and hammered him with a $35,000 fine.
