Berlin : Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk called for the European Union to speak with one voice in its diplomatic dealings with Russia, local reports said.
“The sooner all the countries in the union realise that a united voice in foreign policy is important, the better the relations of the individual countries and of the union as a whole with our neighbour in the east would develop,” Tusk wrote in a guest column in the German daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung Monday.
Charting separate courses could only jeopardise the interests of the union as a whole, especially in the field of energy, he warned.
“There is no question of coherence here. Divergent interests, or even rivalries, are the order of the day,” he said.
Poland has called on the 27-member EU, most of which heavily depend on Russia for oil and gas, to adopt a joint position on energy policies, instead of the current separate bilateral deals with Russia.
According to EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana, the EU and Russia are soon to begin the stalled talks on a new cooperation deal.
Poland vetoed the launch of the talks due to an import ban Moscow imposed on Polish food products.
