Brussels : The Council of Europe’s rapporteur on civil liberties and human rights, Dick Marty, has called for a revision of the EU mechanisms for blacklisting terrorists.
Marty called for an independent authority to be established to supervise the blacklisting system, noting that “today, most of the people targeted are Muslims, but tomorrow this person could be you or me.”
Marty, a Swiss politician, was speaking at the European Parliament’s Civil Liberties Committee in a debate in Strasbourg Monday, according to an EP statement Tuesday.
The EU’s blacklisting system, created after the Sept 11 attacks in 2001, is used to impose restrictive measures against persons or entities suspected of terrorism. Hamas, which won democratic elections in Palestine, is one of the Islamic groups on the EU terror list.
The Strasbourg-based Council of Europe is a 47-member human rights watchdog.
