New Pakistani govt should work in a harmonious manner with all stakeholders: Musharraf

Islamabad : President Pervez Musharraf Tuesday hoped that the new post-election scenario would move in a positive direction and the new government would work in a harmonious manner with all the stakeholders.

Talking to a delegation of US Senators; Joseph Biden, John Kerry and Chuck Hagel, here at the Aiwan-e-Sadr, the President said his unswerving commitment to democracy was once again vindicated by the holding of free, fair, transparent and peaceful elections in the country.

The post-election scenario had unfolded new political dynamics which hopefully would move in a positive direction, the President said.

He hoped that the new government would work in a harmonious manner with all the stakeholders. President Musharraf stressed that all political parties must now focus on the future and cooperate in the best interest of the country.

The US Senators who are visiting Pakistan to observe the elections, discussed the successful completion of the February 18 election and Pakistan-US relations.

The US Senators appreciated the President for fulfilling his commitment to hold election in a free and transparent manner.

They said the President now had a great opportunity to strengthen the democratic process and take the country forward.

The delegation noted that a democratic, economically stable and strong Pakistan was important for regional peace and stability,.

They also pointed at the role of Pakistan in fighting terrorism and said it was important not only for the country but also for the world.

The Senators emphasized that Pakistan-U.S. relations should not be transactional and limited to cooperation on counter terrorism but these must be broad-based and diverse to serve the best interest of both the countries.

President Musharraf also underlined the importance of a broad-based relationship between Pakistan and the United States that is based on commonality of interests and better understanding of the realities in Pakistan.
