New Delhi : Three Afghan nationals, including two burqa-clad women, have been arrested at the Delhi airport for allegedly trying to smuggle fine-quality heroin worth Rs.100 million in the international market, officials said Thursday.
According to customs officials, Sakhi Dad and his two sisters Afghan Gul and Khanom Gul were arrested Wednesday evening after they landed at the Indira Gandhi International Airport. They were produced before a city court, which has remanded them to 14-day judicial custody.
Additional Commissioner of Customs Sanjay Kumar said the women were hiding five kg of heroin in their waist belt.
“The contraband was recovered from them after security officials found their conduct suspicious while they were passing through the green channel. The trio was stopped and frisked,” Kumar said.
Kumar said it was the first time women from Afghanistan were arrested for drug smuggling.
Dad, in his interrogation, revealed he had asked his sisters to wear the veil and conceal the drugs in their belts.
“Dad said they were supposed to deliver the drugs to someone at a hotel in south Delhi’s Jungpura. He said he was a mere conduit and was offered $3,000 to transport the drugs to India,” Kumar said.
