New Delhi : George F. Smoot, a physics Nobel laureate, will delver a lecture at a college in Pune during his visit to India to popularise science and mathematics.
Smoot, the 2006 Nobel Prize winner, will speak about the history and fate of the universe at Pune’s Government College of Engineering March 4 and 5.
The Indian arm of the US headquartered Honeywell International, an engineering firm, has invited the scientist.
“The aim is to popularise mathematics and science though Nobel laureates. Smoot will deliver a lecture at the college and interact with over 1,000 students and faculties,” Indira Das, Honeywell’s director communication (India), told IANS here.
He will also deliver a colloquium on the cosmic microwave background during his visit.
The Honeywell Nobel Laureate Lecture Series brings students together with some of the world’s most advanced minds to inspire and motivate the development of the leading scientists of the future, Das explained.
The India initiative was launched in December 2007 with the visit of Sheldon Lee Glashow, the 1979 Nobel Laureate in Physics, to the Visveswarya Technological University, Belgaum in Karnataka.
Smoot has authored over 200 science papers and is also co-author of the popular scientific book “Wrinkles in Time” that describes intricacies of cosmology. He conducts research in astrophysics and observational cosmology and is most famous for his research on cosmic background radiation.
