Bangalore : Top space scientist and former Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) chairman U.R. Rao has been elected as Fellow of the reputed US-based World Academy of Art and Science (WASS).
Rao was elected for his outstanding and creative accomplishments in space science. The academy Fellows are chosen on the basis of their inter-disciplinary interests, record of public service and global perspective, the Indian space agency said in a statement here Friday.
The San Francisco headquartered WASS is the only reputed academy having a worldwide network of fellows from diverse culture, nationalities and intellectual disciplines.
Karnataka-born Udupi Ramachandra Rao was responsible for the successful launch of Indian space satellites (Insat) series during his decade-long stint at ISRO from 1984-1994.
Rao is currently head of advisory committee on space sciences at the ISRO. He is also the president of Physical Research Laboratory in Ahmedabad.
