18 civilians injured in a bus blast in Sri Lanka

New Delhi : At least 18 people, including an eight months old infant were injured in the bus blast at Mt. Lavinia, near national capital of Sri Lanka, Colombo Saturday.

The explosion occurred in a private passenger bus that was plying from Moratuwa in the south to Colombo, All India Radio (AIR) reported here quoting Spokesman at the Media Center for Sri Lankan National Security.

All the injured have been admitted to the hospital. ‘However condition of none of them is serious’.

A major tragedy was averted as the passengers were evacuated soon after the conductor of the bus located an unattended parcel under the back seat of the bus, said the spokesman. “The parcel turned out to be a bomb which exploded a few minutes later”, the spokesman added.

The bus and a two wheeler parked near by were completely destroyed under the impact of the blast.
