Istanbul : Five Turkish soldiers and 24 members of the Kurdish Workers Party (PKK) were killed in the Turkish military land offensive against the rebels in northern Iraq, the Turkish Army said Saturday.
The Turkish Army Command said on its website that thousands of Turkish troops were taking part in this wide scale operation, which began after shelling a number of locations that Ankara claims are PKK strongholds.
Yesterday, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the operation was limited and that his country’s troops would withdraw as soon as the mission was completed.
Turkey claims that it has the right to strike against the 3,000 PKK rebels it says are in northern Iraq, who have killed dozens of Turkish soldiers.
