Gaza : A delegation grouping leading figures in Hamas and Islamic Jihad Movement (IJM) headed to Egypt through Rafah border crossing on Saturday.
According to a radio station in Gaza, the delegation was headed by Hamas figure Dr. Mahmoud Al-Zahhar who will meet Egyptian security officials at El-Arish in Sinai.
The delegation also included Jamal Abu Hashem and Saeed Sayyam from Hamas, as well as Dr. Mohammad Al-Hindi from IJM who was participating for the first time ever in talks with Egyptian officials.
Speaking to a local radio station, Hamas’ Ayman Taha said the meeting was aimed at receiving Egypt’s feedback regarded issues brought up in previous forums, noting that Egyptian officials will fill in the delegation about matters relevant to ending unrest with Israel and its blockade against Gaza, in addition to re-opening Rafah’s crossing with Egypt and other affairs.
On Friday, Hamas was contacted by Egypt who said that today will witness the release of the first batch of Palestinians who were detained in Egypt last month, added Taha.
Hamas and Egyptian officials held a series of meetings following the destruction of a gate separating Egyptian-Palestinian borders and the crossing of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians into Egypt last month.
On February 14, a Hamas delegation arrived in Egypt for talks with local intelligence officials and listed Gaza’s need for basic products.
At that time, the two sides discussed ending unrest with Israel, Palestinian prisoners held in Egypt after crossing the border, as well as forming in El-Arish a Palestinian-Egyptian team to handle pending issues.
