The mine explosion took place in the province of Bingol, said the report, adding the injured soldier was rushed to a military hospital in Elazig by a helicopter.

Turkish General Staff announced on Friday that its armed forces launched a cross-border ground operation into northern Iraq as of 7 p.m. (1700 GMT) on Thursday following an artillery bombardment.

The PKK, listed by the United States and Turkey as a terrorist group, took up arms against Turkey in 1984 with the aim of creating an ethnic homeland in the southeast of the country. More than 30,000 people have been killed in the over-two-decade conflict.
