New York : Iran Saturday said the actions taken by the UN Security Council against the country over its nuclear programme lack any shred of logic and legality.
Citing the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) report on Iran, which was issued Friday, the country’s permanent representative to the UN Mohammad Khazae said the report proved that the allegations made by some countries against Iran were totally flawed and baseless, official IRNA news agency reported.
In its report, the UN nuclear watchdog said that Iran had become more transparent about its nuclear programme though it failed to provide credible answers to suspicions about the real nature of its nuclear programme.
“As the report has stressed, Iran has been serious and sincere in its full cooperation with the IAEA and has been resolutely cooperating in a proactive manner for the implementation of the work plan which was concluded between Iran and the agency in August 2007,” Khazae said.
“The report well indicates an unprecedented and resolute voluntary cooperation with the IAEA on the part of the Islamic country, beyond its obligation in accordance with the comprehensive safeguards agreement.
“The report also serves as a solid evidence that Iran is a responsible, transparent, and predictable member of the NPT, and is fully committed to its international obligations with regard to its peaceful nuclear programme,” he added.
IAEA chief Mohamed ElBaradei, who drew up the 11-page report, said his team had made “quite good progress in clarifying the outstanding issues that had to do with Iran’s past nuclear activities”.
However, he highlighted the Islamic country’s failure to address reports about possible links between uranium enrichment and missile warhead design work and high explosives tests.
UN Security Council’s five permanent members plus Germany agreed at talks in Berlin Jan 22 on a draft for a third sanctions resolution against Iran calling for travel bans, asset freezes and vigilance on all banks in Iran.
France and Britain officially introduced the new draft resolution in the UN Security Council Friday, and the council members are expected to vote on the resolution next week.
However, the outcome of the vote will largely depend on the report by IAEA.
