Baghdad : A barrage of rockets rocked the heavily fortified Green Zone in central Baghdad on Saturday, an Interior Ministry source said.
“Seven Katusha rockets struck the Green Zone early in the morning,” the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.
The source could not tell whether there were any casualties by the attack in the area that houses the Iraqi government offices and foreign embassies, including the U.S. one.
The U.S. military has no immediate comment on the incident.
The blasts in the early morning could be heard from different parts of the Iraqi capital.
The Green Zone is a vast area on the west side of the Tigris River which bisects the Iraq capital.
The U.S. military frequently blamed Shiite militias for the attacks, particularly, Iranian-backed special groups who are out of the control of the Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr and refuse to follow his ceasefire order. Iran denies the U.S. allegations.
On Friday, Sadr ordered to renew a six-month freeze for his Mahdi Army militia and the U.S. military welcomed the move.
