Durban : Led by country’s ace racer Narain Karthikeyan, the A1 Team India had a practice session here Friday ahead of the A1GP’s only street race and finished in eighth place.
The street race keeps spectators around the world on the edge of their seats as top international drivers race around the tight, twisty street circuit of Durban for national pride.
For the A1 Team India, rookie Parthiv Sureswaran Friday went out first to drive a few laps independently for the first time following the team’s practice round.
Sureswaran came in to the pit lane in a respectable eighth place.
After his stint, Sureswaran said: “It is a track I’ve never driven on before and I really enjoyed it. I haven’t driven on a street circuit for seven years since I drove in Macau.”
Karthikeyan, the only Indian driver with Formula One experience, then stepped in for the last practice session and managed to keep the Team India car consistently in the top 5.
“I think we had a reasonable first day. We’ve made some more changes for Saturday and that should improve our performance. I’m really looking forward to the weekend,” said Karthikeyan after the drive.
A1 Team India has 28 points and is in 12th position in the Championship table.
