Cuban parliament to elect Castro”s successor

KUWAIT, Feb 24 (KUNA) — Cuba’s parliament will meet later on Sunday to elect a new president who will succeed Fidel Castro.

According to the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), “Acting President Raul Castro is widely expected to officially take over the post he has filled ever since his elder brother Fidel was taken ill in 2006.” As for persons expected to takeover the presidency instead of Raul, they “are the 56-year-old de-facto Prime Minister Carlos Lage and the even more youthful foreign minister, Felipe Perez Roque, who is 42.” Except for a few photos that were released, Fidel has not appeared in public since relinquishing power to his brother.

The BBC noted that although Fidel has chosen to step down as commander-in-chief, he will continue writing editorials for the communist party’s newspaper.
